Job Description

The Senior Research & Development (R&D) Project Manager is a significant leadership role within the Global Portfolio and Project Management Office (PPMO).  The role focuses on hands-on project management for multiple New Product Development (NPD) projects across a variety of franchises (Nature’s Bounty®, Osteo Bi-Flex®, Solgar®, Sundown®, American Health®, Ester-C®, Puritans Pride®, etc.).  The Sr. Project Manager will lead multiple cross-functional teams simultaneously through all stages of the project lifecycle, from feasibility analysis and scope definition through to launching on time and in full.

The Sr. Project Manager embodies a productive, general management mindset for each project, striving to lead his/her teams to deliver products that delight the consumer and deliver profitable growth to the business, while also identifying opportunities along the way to improve our process and capabilities for future endeavors.

The Sr. Project Manager also provides leadership that extends beyond projects to ensure leadership across the pipeline for a brand or franchise/business unit.  The individual is a role model for other project managers and project team members across the business, bringing best practices and capabilities to enhance the way projects are executed and pipelines are managed.

Critical skills needed to perform the job include a strong sense of ownership, cross-functional team leadership, scenario planning, project resource planning, leading teams to solve complex problems, excellent communication skills, critical path identification, diligent follow-through, escalation skills, resilience, navigating stage-gate governance, business acumen and enterprise thinking.

Responsibilities include:

  • Deliver NPD programs; efficiently meeting scope requirements, with quality, on time and in full
  • Utilize best-practice project management knowledge, skills, tools and techniques to plan, manage and deliver idea/concept through launch and project close-out
  • Hold all stakeholders accountable for delivering with excellence
  • Lead multiple complex projects through kick-off/team formation, define project plan/scope with cross-functional team, create/manage master project timeline and ensure all required activities/critical path tasks and resources are aligned with agreed-to project deliverables
  • Monitor project status and execution; keep timelines up-to-date, keep risk assessments current, develop agendas, minutes, metrics, etc. for project teams
  • Manage multiple complex projects through the Stage Gate process including providing guidance and expertise to teams on stage gate expectations, deliverables, and facilitating the completion of required assessments and documentation
  • Proactively identify and escalate risks and issues to relevant stakeholders; with direction and guidance, lead development and delivery of risk mitigation strategies
  • Develop project resource plans, obtain buy in from cross functional leaders and team members.
  • Identify project resource gaps.  Develop recommendation and gain alignment from key stakeholders for contingency plans and approach to bridge resource gaps
  • Highly skilled in working with and incorporating activities/deliverables of outside parties including external supply partners and third party labs and manufacturers
  • Provide leadership to business units on developing and managing the project pipeline to deliver expected value for short and long term.
  • Independently present oral and written reports with critical path timeline assessment, resource assessment and risk assessment to executive level leaders and stakeholders
  • Keep project records up-to-date and support all PPMO reporting activities
  • Lead continuous improvement efforts to maximize effectiveness of current operational tools, processes, procedures and systems to mitigate technical and operational risk ensure flawless execution of projects

Job Requirements

  • 5+ years of project management experience leading/managing cross-functional teams
  • Prefer 3+ years of direct experience in managing new product development projects from idea to market launch
  • Experience working with Stage Gate processes and consumer packaged goods projects; strong knowledge of Stage Gate process as a contributor and project manager
  • Proven record of leading teams in delivering results
  • Must have experience working in at least one functional area, i.e. R&D, Supply Chain, Project Management, Procurement, Marketing
  • 8+ years of professional experience; prefer 2+ years of experience within a CPG and /or OTC healthcare company
  • Proven ability to resolve conflict and act independently through ambiguity
  • Bachelor’s degree is required, preferably in Sciences, Engineering, Business or related discipline
  • Master’s degree or MBA or other advanced degree desirable
  • PMP/PMI Certification(s)
  • Experience with advanced team collaboration tools and methodologies is a plus
  • Six Sigma Certification is a plus
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Business and financial acumen required
  • Strong planning and organizational skills 
  • Proven ability to deliver programs on time and within budget 
  • Product lifecycle management (PLM) system knowledge desired
  • Must be familiar with standard PM tools and templates; strong MS Office suite skills; project planning expertise using Microsoft Project or comparable tool is required
  • Highly developed leadership skills; understands how to motivate, negotiate, facilitate, delegate, escalate
  • Experience interacting with and influencing senior leadership
